CAS: Creativity, Action, Service

What is CAS?

Together with Theory of Knowledge (TOK), CAS lies at the heart of the IB programme. It strives to develop the students' personalities and plays an important part in helping them fulfil the criteria set out in the IB Learner Profile. CAS is instrumental in enabling the students to become critically thinking, compassionate, balanced and well-informed citizens who are lifelong learners, view the world from an international perspective and rise to new challenges.

CAS means learning through experience. These experiences are reflected upon before, during and after the activities. At the end of each activity it is evaluated with regard to the student's personal development and its benefit for others. CAS is comprised of three areas. Creativity includes all those activities which involve and encourage creative thinking, e.g. activities related to theatre, art, literature and music. Action means physical activity which supports a healthy lifestyle. Service meets a genuine need and benefits others. It can be carried out at the school, in the community or abroad and is always unpaid. All activities should lead to real results and pose personal challenges for the students. Each student must do CAS for at least 18months continuously and complete a total of about 150 hours.
The best projects are those which combine at least two of the CAS areas, e.g. when being physically active or creative also provides a service to others. It may also be a good idea to choose projects which relate to one of the other IB subjects. International projects encourage tolerance, understanding and acceptance of other cultures and provide the students with more opportunities to communicate in a foreign language.

CAS-Activities in the FKG Programme

The CAS policy of Felix-Klein-Gymnasium is, on the one hand, to offer the students a wide range of possible activities, especially combined service projects, within the school and the community, and, on the other hand, to encourage them to choose and organize their own projects according to their strengths and interests.

The range of long and short term activities on offer includes

  • projects within the school
  • projects in the nursery and primary schools with which the FKG is closely cooperating in the "Kooperationsverbund zur Förderung besonderer Begabungen"

  • projects in the community

  • international endeavours abroad


  • individual activities in the areas of creativity and action.


Projects in the schools, in the community and abroad, which combine all or some of the elements creativity, action and service, offer a particularly wide spectrum of opportunities for experiential learning.

All projects on offer enable the students to develop personally by learning new skills, undertaking new challenges, working with others, showing perseverance and becoming aware of their own personal strengths and weaknesses and thus reaching the CAS outcomes. The combined service projects in the school and in the community meet a genuine need. At the same time they also often provide special opportunities to reflect on the ethical implications of the activities and will in many cases help to develop the global awareness of the students.

Students are expected to plan a varied and balanced CAS programme for themselves, which also includes some projects that take them out of their comfort zone, and to put this programme into practice over a period of 18 months. It must consist of a variety of long and short term projects and must help the student to develop new skills and meet all the CAS outcomes. The CAS coordinator will provide support and advice regarding project selection and planning. Each project is documented and reflected upon before, during and after the activity.

CAS sessions

Two lessons a week are used for meetings between the students and the CAS coordinator. These are either for the whole group or for individual students. Items covered are, for instance, experience-based learning through guided reflection, discussion and evaluation of individual programmes and projects as well as the planning of group activities.


Students are required to give presentations of their work for the (school) community at either CAS fairs and / or other events. Each student finishes his or her CAS programme with a final presentation.
